Tyre Buying Dos and Don'ts

Tyres are the single most important safety feature on any vehicle. Your tyres are the connection between your car and the road. Life-saving technologies like electronic stability control and antilock brakes cannot perform well if the tyres do not have a good grip on the pavement.

Liverpool Tyre Sale shares a list of simple do's and don'ts that will help you make good decisions when it comes time to buy new tyres.

1. DON'T SPEND TOO LITTLE ON YOUR TYRES.

Cheap, poorly designed tyres can take longer stopping distances and provide less control in an emergency situation. Buy tyres with an A or AA rating.

2. DON'T SPEND TOO MUCH ON YOUR TYRES IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO

Well-known brands provide a consistently high level of quality but they are expensive as compared to lesser-known tyre manufacturers that produce excellent products at lower prices.

3. DON'T ASSUME ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT IS BEST.

Cars come with original tyres fitted from the factory, but buying the same tyre as a replacement is not always the best choice.

This is because manufacturers fit a tyre that provides acceptable performance in all conditions from summers to winters. They may choose a tyre that emphasizes comfort over handling or handling over tread life. You can do better by shopping around as a consumer because you know what your driving needs are.

4. DO PICK THE RIGHT TYRE DEALER.

Many people go to the dealership or their local mechanic when the time comes to shop for tyres. Often these businesses carry a limited number of brands or tyre models. Choose a full-service tyre dealer who carries a wide range of brand names and is familiar with local weather and road conditions.

5. DO HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS.

Tyres are a trade-off. Tyres that give a more comfortable ride may be less agile in the corners, while performance tyres tend to wear out faster.

6. DO BUY TWO SETS OF TYRES.

Tyres are like shoes for your cars. Can you use the same pair of shoes for jogging, hiking, tramping through snow, and ballet dancing? Then how can you use all-season tyres for every kind of weather and road? Even though all-season tyres are designed to handle all weather conditions, but they are not optimised for any particular season. Buy a set of proper snow tyres to use them in the winter. You can opt for a summer tyre for a more comfortable ride or longer tread-life during summers.

7. DO BUY FOUR TYRES AT ONCE.

New tyres have a better grip on the road as compared to tyres that have some miles on them. For optimal performance, it is best to replace all four tyres at once. But if you can’t replace altogether, put the new tyres on the back.
