What Makes Wheel Alignment So Important?

There are a few signs that indicate your vehicle needs a wheel alignment:

  • a)Your car pulls to one side when you are driving.
  • b)When you are driving the car straight but your steering wheel doesn’t look straight.
  • c)Your tyres wear out faster than usual.

One of the biggest causes of premature tyre wear is wheels that are out of alignment. A wheel alignment is an adjustment to a vehicle’s suspension that affects how the tyres make contact with the roads surface.

How is a wheel alignment done?

Automobile manufacturers designate standard angles for correct alignment which are quantified in degrees. These angles are taken from several vantage points for example: front, side and from above.

A qualified tyre technician adjusts the degrees of the angles with an alignment machine if a vehicle’s suspension becomes out of alignment. The degrees of the angles are represented by camber, toe and caster.

  • Camber
  • If you notice a distinct inward or outward tilt of the wheel when looking at the vehicle from the front, this indicates the positive or negative camber needs to be adjusted. A camber is a line where the centre tread remains intact and of significant tread wear on the inside or the outside of the tyre.

  • Toe
  • If your tyres appear to turn inwards or outwards when looking at your vehicle from above, the vehicle needs a toe alignment. Another indication of toe misalignment is when one side of the tyre is wearing more than the other.

  • Caster
  • This is an angle which determines if the steering axis is tilted forward or backward when viewed from the side. The steering axis should be at the centre ideally. Caster affects the steering of the vehicle.

The benefits of wheel alignments

  • a)Improve tyre life
  • By having a periodic wheel alignment, you can prolong the life of your tyres. It pays to ensure your tyres will last as long as they possibly can.

  • b)Improve fuel economy
  • Wheel alignments help you to drive your vehicle properly at the correct angles and use less fuel as there is less resistance.

  • c)Improve safety
  • Proper wheel alignments make sure the tyres wear uniformly preventing the tyre to blow out and the driver to have less control over the vehicle.

Wheel alignments preserve the life of your tyres and your car’s suspension. Liverpool Tyre Sale recommends all drivers to invest in a wheel alignment and wheel balance regularly.
